RMIT University and the Victorian branch of the Web Standards Group would like to invite you to attend a free workshop on the legal aspects of Web sites.

Would you like to understand more about:

• Which Web sites should opt into the Privacy Act, and how?
• How a bank’s merchant agreement can affect a Web site?
• Whether a Web site’s terms of use are actually useful?

We have found that many Australian Web sites implement privacy policies, terms of use and disclaimers very poorly or not at all. We hope to improve that by producing a guide to Web legalities - a sraightforward document that helps Web developers provide better advice to clients.

This workshop will provide you with a better understanding of:

• Privacy Act
• Trade Practices Act (and Victorian equivalent)
• Merchant obligations imposed by banks and credit providers

and the relevant legal issues to address when designing a Web site.

In return, we wish to understand how you work with clients with regard to the legal aspects of their Web sites and how you gain your knowledge of the relevant law. That will help us to design a guide that will be sensible and useful.

When complete, the guide will be freely downloadable. A copy will also be sent to all participants.

About the organisers

Professor Margaret Jackson is RMIT’s Professor in Computer Law. She conducts research in the areas of computer law, protection of
information, data protection and privacy, and copyright. Margaret is the author of Hughes on Data Protection in Australia and A Practical Guide to Protecting Confidential Business Information.

Jonathan O’Donnell is an active member of the Web Standards Group. He specialises in Web accessibility, usability and metadata. Recent conference presentations include Naked and Wild metadata, Accessible podcasting and Solutions drawn from Australian case studies in mobile commerce.
