2009 AWIA Committee Nomination Statements

The following Australian Web Industry Association members have been nominated for positions on the 2009/2010 Australian Web Industry Association Committee. Please read through each nominee’s short statement and consider their suitability to sit on the AWIA steering committee before voting at the AGM.

Paul Abrahams

Paul is Loaded Studios primary design, brand and creative specialist and is the conceptual force behind all Loaded Studios work, including web and new media solutions.

Paul’s experience includes stints working as a creative lead in the vibrant Singapore development and design industry, delivering work to clients including Palm, BBC World and Changi Airport.

Almost a decade after establishing Loaded Studios, Paul is heavily invested in bridging the gap between design, development and new media/digital solutions, delivering work to organisations including the AFL, Lotterywest and the State Government.

Paul offers a creative mind, an owners’ perspective and a solid understanding of how design, development and project delivery operate in partnership to ensure a positive end-user experience.

Naomi Allan

Naomi is a Director of insilico where her primary role is to manage the office.  She has been a member of AWIA for 2 years and has attended many Port80 meetings and Barcamp3.

She is still a newbie to this interwebs thingymebob and is non-technical however she does have excellent organisational and administration skills and knows how to use a phone and send emails.

If you want something done – give it to Naomi!!!

In the past Naomi was in the Real Estate industry for over 13 years and is currently a member of a not for profit organisation – Soroptimist International.

Gary Barber

Gary Barber is the principal user experience designer at radharc (radharc.com.au) with a focus on UX design, usability and information architecture.  He is a realistic standardista who is constantly mentoring and exercising his passion for  creativity, usability, accessibility and minimal user experiences.

Gary has been involved with AWIA for the last two and half years as treasurer, a role which he is stepping down from.  In this time he has take the Associations accounts from a state of total disarray to one of compliance and order.  Not bad considering he hates accounting.

He feels that he can still contribute to the web community and AWIA in its future Australia wide endeavours.   He also loves writing in the third person.

Andrew Boyd

Andrew is based in Canberra, Australia. He has been managing and designing information systems for more than a decade, mainly in the defence, government and health sectors.

Andrew is currently the senior UCD practitioner for a large government organisation where he advises on web information and service delivery, quality/process design, IA, IxD, and usability/accessibility evaluation - and sometimes he even gets to do some design work.

A co-convener of the Canberra IA Cocktail Hours, he is partial to good peaty single malt whiskey, conference tourism, organising web community social networking events, and fine dining.

Jordan Brock

I would like to nominate for re-election to the AWIA Committee.

I have been building websites for clients since 1995, both as a business owner, and as an employee. I am currently working for Five Senses Coffee.

I have been on the AWIA Committee for 2 and a half years, both as the Vice Chair and the Secretary, as well as being involved in BarCamp and AWIA events, and would be honoured to be able to continue working on behalf of the members.

Nick Cowie

Been building websites for the WA State Government since 1998.

Founding member of AWIA.

Active in the local community, BarCamp, WSG, OSIG.

I am always willing to share my knowledge.

Would like to see a GovSphere in Perth.

I want to get involved in the AWIA committee to repay the work done by AWIA.

Matt Didcoe

My name is Matt Didcoe, I’m a freelance website developer and student. I’ve been working with various web technologies for the past 4 years including PHP, Ruby and a little Python and Java(!).

I’ve been involved in organising the 2005 & 2006 WA Web Awards, BarCamp 3.0 and some of the Perth Ruby on Rails meetups. I’m also a Wheel (System administrator) group member at the University Computer Club.

I therefore tender my nomination to the Australian Web Industry Association committee so I can be involved in continuing the attempts to make AWIA a truly national association and a recognised industry body for all who work in the Web Industry.

Richard Giles

Richard Giles is the Social Media Specialist for the CPSU/CSA.

Richard was an Australian web pioneer in the early-nineties, designing corporate websites while still at University in 1994, and was one of Curtin Universities first lecturers on the topic of the World Wide Web in 1995.

Richard then worked for Sun Microsystems for nine years and while there he started one of Sun’s first podcasts, interviewing executives like Jonathan Schwartz, Andy Bechtolsheim, David Yen, and Hal Stern.

Richard left Sun in 2006 after working in his spare time to author two books: Podcasting Pocket Guide, and How To Use Flickr: The Digital Photography Revolution.

He then co-founded Recommendation Ventures. As CEO Richard drove RV to be proclaimed as one of Australia’s top ten web 2.0 applications, and winner of the Australian Startup Carnival 2008.

Richard Keeves

Richard Keeves has been a company director and business owner since 1979. From 1987 to1995, he started and ran a Perth-based national publishing company before moving into the online world in 1995.

From 1995 to 2008, Richard was the founder and MD of Internet Business Corporation (IBC) where he and the IBC team consulted with different businesses, government agencies and Not For Profits and developed many different online systems. He has conducted business seminars around Australia and internationally, and has been a keynote speaker at various conferences. Richard sold his interest in IBC in 2008 and is now consulting in the industry whilst working on preparing several new training programs and books.

Richard has served on various industry bodies, and was the President of the Western Australian Internet Association from 2004 to 2008. Richard has been featured on many radio and TV programs as an Internet specialist.

He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management, and a Fellow of the Customer Service Institute of Australia.

Ben May

I’m Ben May,  20 years old, and have been involved with the web for about 7 years, the last 4 of those, professionally. After Graduating from High School, I started my own business working in IT and Web Design and made a partnership to move forward as Design House.

Working in Australia’s 2nd fastest growing city, we are fortunate enough to have very healthy growth and have risen to one of the regions preferred and trusted Website Design agencies.

Since Joining AWIA in ’07, I have been in contact with Miles every once in a while about helping spread AWIA further east, and seeing what I can do to help move things along in Qld / East Coast of Aus. I would really like to help take AWIA to the next level.

Susan MacGillivray

I have been working for 11 years as a best practice web standards Australian Federal Government web developer and designer with a particular interest in user centered design and accessibility in attempt to make a better user experience for Australian Government online services.

I am very involved in the federal government web community here in Canberra and look forward to implementing a more open approach to gov2 strategies.

I nominate myself to be on the AWIA committee this year.

Michael Ott

Michael is a Perth-based veteran of the web design industry, having started his design career in early 1998. A committed web standards evangelist and practitioner, Michael’s focus is on delivering good designs with high usability, implementing accessibility best practices when required. He is currently serving as Senior Designer at Titan Interactive and also runs ThatWebGuyBlog, a resource which aims to provide web design/development advice for both professionals and beginners alike.

Guy Park

Educated at Murdoch University, gaining a Bachelors of Computer Science.

Activities includes the current partaking in the, newly forming, Perth Usability Professional Association (UPA) Chapter.

Employment has mainly consisted around or in the web industry.  This includes companies like Freckle Creative, holding positions of Project Manager and Senior Web Developer.  Other employment has brought in-depth exposure of other various technologies and experience, from Linux administration to programming of Oracle OLAP technology (used for financial analytics of large organisations).

Guy’s current employment is at Itomic Pty Ltd.

Cindy Prosser

Cindy-Leigh Prosser is a web architect & visual designer who began designing with web standards while living in Ottawa, Canada in 2000 & established Attitude e-media in Mandurah, Western Australia in 2001.  Cindy has moderated & administered e-Business & Web Development forums, & had publications in various forms of media in regards to early web design. She has a Diploma in Film & Media Design, and has worked in both the editorial and advertising departments of state and local news media.  Cindy has been online since 1995 and had her first website published on the Web in 1998.

Two of Cindy’s passions are CSS Design & Green IT. So Attitude e-media invested in running their infrastructure on Natural Power.   Cindy is currently exploring the UK & Europe while putting the mobile office to the test, returning the end of September ready for the EOTW.

Ashul Shah

I am a founding director of a Perth based web development firm called Eduka.

I would like to nominate myself for a committee position at AWIA.

I have done what I can to support AWIA as a member of the forums on port 80, having been on the committee of the WA web awards and provided monetary support where possible to many AWIA events.

I have not joined the committee before as I am did not believe I could give 100% to the association due to work commitments. Recently things have changed at work and I now feel I am ready to put time and effort in to help take AWIA to the next level.

I am passionate about the web industry and AWIA - it is now time to give something back!

Harriet Wakelam

I work in, around and through the web.  I also work in online ed. I have one of those jobs with no name that revolves around online ’stuff’… AWIA’s been important for me in building and supporting connections.. to get that random collision of ideas.

What AWIA’s built in Perth is great.. Having just moved from Perth to Melbourne, I’ve met a new diverse and creative bunch of people who work in, around and across the web. I’d like to build more ties between Perth and Melbourne.. I’m looking forward to finding out how, and what it’ll look like… *cough* just need 2 more years….
