Instead of continuing to send out individual emails, we thought a small how-to article would of help to you the members.

So let us get started.

Step 1 - the login

  • Login to the website in the upper right hand side of the menu there is a login link.

  • This provides you with a login page. If you have not visited the website in a while you will need to request a new password. This is done by email to make sure you are who you say you are.

Your username is the email address you have provided to us, just like the old site. Your password MUST have 1 uppercase character, 1 numeric character and be at least 8 characters long.

Step 2 - editing your profile

  • Once you are logged in you find the menu choices on the  upper right hand side have changed. You now have your username (this is an email address you provided), a My Account Link as well as a Logout link.

Select the "My Account" link to go to your account Profile page.

  • Your Profile Landing page until you have updated your profile your landing page will look like this, with just your Email (username) showing and a notice to edit your profile. You are also provided with three buttons. One to edit your profile. One to change your email/password and one to renew your account.

We will look at editing your profile first so click on the "Edit Account Profile" button

  • You should now see the image to the left as your account profile page. Fill in the details that you would like to share with us. There are some required fields however, so we can address you properly in any correspondence.

This page holds to sections - one which is contact details and the other is to do with your business if you are a business member. Business members are able to have their profile in the Web Industry Directory area of this website as part of their memberhsip.

At the end of the page there is a "Save Account Profile" button. This saves the information to our sites database where you can edited at any time by logging in and choosing "My Account" and following these processes again.

Once the information has been saved you are sent back to the Account Profile landing page.

Step 3 - edit email and password

  • Change email and password Once you have selected the "Change Email/Password" button it takes you to this page. this is where you can change yoru  contact email which is also used for your username. You can change you password here too. Just remember that you need 1 uppercase character, 1 numeric character and the password needs to be at least 8 characters long. You will also need to put in your old password to confirm that you want to change your password.

At the bottom of this form is  the "Change Email/Password" button which will save the changes you have made to your email and password. It will also send you back to your profile landing page.

Finally Renewal

The final button is to renew your membership. This button takes you to a renewal form where you can fill out your details to renew.

Questions

There are some common Questions that keep coming up.

  1. So what happens if I am having trouble renewing? If you are having trouble renewing then you will need to call Krystie on 08 9245 6575 to process an off-line renewal.

Port80 attendees will remember @stuartkhall's excellent talk on the subject of iPad/iPhone development. Turns out he knows what he's talking about.

He's CTO of filtersquad.com (formerly Jammbox); they’ve just taken out the Tech23 Greatest Potential Award in Sydney. The award’s given to the company showing ‘the greatest potential for growth and progress’.

That would have something to do with @Discovr, which has just ticked over a million downloads and 5 million sessions.

Constitutional change Carried at AGM http://www.webindustry.asn.au/news-and-events/news/constitutional-change-carried-at-agm/ http://www.webindustry.asn.au/news-and-events/news/constitutional-change-carried-at-agm/#When:04:20:50Z http://www.webindustry.asn.au/news-and-events/news/constitutional-change-carried-at-agm/#comments The constitutional change to allow for postal votes was approved the members present at the AGM on 6 July 2011.

This change will allow all members around Australia to participate in the voting of important matters in the Association. The Committee saw this as a great step forward to be a non-WA centric organisation that represents the Web Industry Australia wide.

How do you think we look now? http://www.webindustry.asn.au/news-and-events/news/how-do-you-think-we-look-now/ http://www.webindustry.asn.au/news-and-events/news/how-do-you-think-we-look-now/#When:12:16:13Z http://www.webindustry.asn.au/news-and-events/news/how-do-you-think-we-look-now/#comments This is the new look website for your association. We are consolidating functions from across our domains onto this site such as the Industry Index and moving to a new Subscription Service for Membership renewals etc. The site may still have a few little styling bits and pieces that we will be fixing over the next few weeks. And as you may have realised changing how our membership subscription is done is  a massive job so if your membership has fallen due thenPlease let us know through the secretary so this can be done by a manual service until it is all switched over.

Feedback on this new look is welcome, however please be patient as we tweak and fix any outstanding issues. The Committee thanks you for your patience in this matter as it is a rather difficult "birth" to manage.

A tour of the site.

We have simplified the navigation around the site and provided ease of access to them.

The Members area where you can get access to the Industry Index, your membership details as well as renewal and joining information for new members.

"What we are doing" and this is where information and links to various projects and events are. Especially the Major event like the Australian Web Awards and Edge of the Web Conference, and the Ideas seminar series.

News and Events is the place to find out about what is going on in the Web Industry Association as well as other events around Australia and the World. If you would like to write articles for your peers in the industry let us know. Besides Port80s this is another way to support the industry.

About AWIA is the usual  information about the association, like who the committee is and what our purpose is. You will also find the Constitution here along with other documentation that is of value to both our clients and ourselves.

2011-2012 Committee Announced http://www.webindustry.asn.au/news-and-events/news/2011-2012-committee-announced/ http://www.webindustry.asn.au/news-and-events/news/2011-2012-committee-announced/#When:06:19:43Z http://www.webindustry.asn.au/news-and-events/news/2011-2012-committee-announced/#comments There was a changing of the Guard on 6th July with 7 new committee members voted in and the return of 2 stalwarts.

The new committee members are:

and the return of

The above members join the existing committee members Helen Burgess, Alex Graham and Adam Fitzgerald.

The coming year looks like it is going to be an exciting one with Edge of the Web to start it off - lots of events happening around that week, as well as another ideas seminar coming up soon, the web awards, etc. The committee has now two representatives from the eastern states that means more involvement potentially from those east of the Nullarbor, with the potential to grow as a community and association with all the opportunities we have with our committee members and yourselves.

Remeber that you do not need to be a member of the committee to make a difference and we'd love to hear your suggestions. Just send them on to the secretary.

Thanks Steve and Bruce http://www.webindustry.asn.au/news-and-events/news/thanks-steve-and-bruce/ http://www.webindustry.asn.au/news-and-events/news/thanks-steve-and-bruce/#When:11:53:22Z http://www.webindustry.asn.au/news-and-events/news/thanks-steve-and-bruce/#comments A big Thanks to both Steve Faulkner and Bruce Lawson for the very informative workshop yesterday.

The workshop was attended by approximately 40 Perth web peeps and we all learnt heaps. Like "the browser doesn't care" and Bruce is a wicked belly dancer.

Some points I took away from Steve's talk were:

  • ARIA is about being a bridging technology and can be used with any mark-up language, although some work better than others. Works best with HTML5 though.
  • ARIA's primary use-case is for making web applications accessible to all users of assistive technologies
  • That roles do not work in the way you would think that they do and don't provide any interaction behaviour or provide properties.
  • What roles do like override any native HTML (its best to use spans instead if wanting to keep semantic mark-up), and expose information to accessibility APIs.
  • There are three (3) types of roles: widget, document structure and landmarks
  • Landmark roles are for regions of a page and are intended as navigation landmarks.

I am sure that others attending the workshop have some take-away points as well. So please add in the comments section.

From Bruce's talk we had a brief 30 minute history of the creation/politics of HTML5. It was a very holistic point of view. Bruce also stated that "just because some parts are not ready does not mean that HTML5 cannot be used now". This is because all the browser manufacturers (yes even Microsoft) are working towards implementation before the standard according to the W3C is finished. As it is evolving there are approximate 30 tags that you can now use although the WHATWG.org is working on more through an incubation process.

Some salient points about HTML5 is that it is a mark-up language that is for web applications and as such has lots of stuff we do all the time with JavaScript built in. It is also about the Document Object Model unlike HTML4.

Some of the design principles for Bruce outlined for us were

  • Backwards compatibility with a clear migration path
  • well defined error handling
  • users should not be exposed to authoring errors
  • element must have a practical use that can be justified
  • scripting is here to stay
  • development is an open process
  • the use of "cow paths"
  • the 80/20 rule, and finally
  • consider users over authors over implementers over specifications over theoretical purity.

Bruce also said: "HTML5 does not replace HTML 4 … this is a myth"

There was lots more and I am sure readers will post there points of view in the comments.
